Arcos de la Frontera: A White Village on the Cliff Edge

Arcos de la Frontera is a white Andalusian town on a cliff above the Guadalete River, with cobbled lanes and golden evening walls on the White Villages route.

Some places are not just a view, they are a feeling. Arcos de la Frontera is exactly that.

What is Arcos de la Frontera?

It is one of the most striking stops on Andalusia’s “Pueblos Blancos”, or White Villages, route: a fairytale town built on the edge of a cliff. Narrow cobblestone streets, bright whitewashed houses and the Guadalete River winding below shape its character.

What should you look at in Arcos?

Here you walk, stop and look rather than follow a programme:

  • A walk along the cobbled streets
  • The view from the cliff edge towards the Guadalete River
  • Stone walls turning golden at sunset

When bell sounds and distant flamenco melodies join the sunset, you feel Andalusia to the bone.

What are the Pueblos Blancos?

The name simply means white villages in Spanish. It is used for the whitewashed towns of inland Andalusia and the Cádiz area, set on hills and cliffs with narrow lanes where walking is the natural way to explore.

Building Arcos into an Andalusian route

Arcos is part of the White Villages line. We have written about Setenil de las Bodegas, the town under the rock, and Ronda, the city on the cliff. After a day of walking on cobblestones, comfortable socks matter, and Educated Moto Riders offers tours for those who prefer to travel such routes in a group.
