Nature, sea, history and the warmth of a small town all come together in Assos. A small beach, stone lanes, colourful and charming architecture: it is definitely worth seeing.
Where is Assos and what is it known for?
Assos is a historic settlement on the Aegean coast, part of the Ayvacık district of Çanakkale. The village on the hill is called Behramkale, and the small harbour below is the Assos Ancient Harbour. The Temple of Athena on top is a Doric temple and the symbol of Assos. The philosopher Aristotle is known to have lived here for a time. Its founding goes back to around 2000 BC.
What can you do in Assos?
- Walk the stone streets and soak in the historic texture
- Shop from local sellers
- Stroll along the shore and try the special ice cream
- Have dinner at the fish restaurants by the sea
The ancient harbour area has the Temple of Athena, an amphitheatre, a historic mosque, a bridge, a castle, stone houses, hotels and restaurants.
What happened when we visited?
We had to postpone our plans a little. Çanakkale had been declared a disaster area, and the hotels and restaurants at the ancient harbour were closed for a period to stabilise the large rocks on the hillside of the road. Missing this beautiful place for a while made us sad, but the small beach, stone streets and colourful architecture were enough for us.
What should you remember on the road?
On rocky, twisting coastal roads, keep in mind that falling stones are possible, and check the season and weather before setting out. Nearby you can also explore Troy, Bozcaada and Gökçeada.
For long days of walking on stone streets, Rider Healthcare makes a modal sock designed for city days, and Galata Healthcare offers a daily body care cream. Educated Moto Riders organises trips for those who prefer to explore in a group.
