Riding to Bologna: Notes from the Zagreb Road in 5.5 Hours

From Zagreb to Bologna by motorcycle through Croatia, Slovenia and Italy in 5.5 hours: border, vignette and toll notes plus what makes Bologna special.

From Zagreb to Bologna in 5.5 hours without a single stop, through three countries: Croatia, Slovenia and Italy. The Italian leg of our June 2025 motorcycle tour began that way.

How do you get from Zagreb to Bologna?

The road runs from Croatia to Slovenia and then Italy. Although we crossed three countries, there was no check at any border. Our notes:

  • Time: 5.5 hours non-stop from Zagreb to Bologna.
  • Slovenia e-vignette: You need an e-vignette for Slovenian motorways. You can buy one online for a minimum of one week, and we paid 8 euros for a motorcycle.
  • Italian motorway: You take a ticket at the toll gate and carry on. Between Slovenia and Bologna we paid 45 euros in total.

Slovenian motorways are mountainous and green, passing through villages, which makes riding pleasant.

What is Bologna known for?

Bologna is the capital of the Emilia-Romagna region in northern Italy. It is known for one of the world’s oldest universities, its long arcaded walkways, which are UNESCO listed, and two medieval towers, Asinelli and Garisenda. It is also considered one of Italy’s food capitals. We planned a little city sightseeing and a little gastronomy there, then moved on to other Italian towns.

Where next?

Our first stop after Bologna was Florence, capital of Tuscany on the Arno River and regarded as the birthplace of the Renaissance. It is very touristy and crowded, but with some timing you can plan a comfortable visit. Our Tuscany trip started from there.

Educated Moto Riders offers motorcycle tours and trips for those who prefer to ride long routes with a group.
