Imagine a city where every stone is history and every street looks like a painting. That is what we felt when we saw Bruges. With canals that recall Venice and stone streets that recall the Middle Ages, it was one of the most impressive cities we have seen: quiet, elegant and unforgettable.
What can you do in Bruges?
Bruges is a city to explore without a plan. Every corner hides another detail and every step another view. What we did was simple:
- Walk along canals and stone streets
- Look at the grandeur of the historic buildings
- Catch the sunset by the water before the day ended
What is Bruges known for?
Bruges is in Flanders, in the west of Belgium. It was an important trading centre of northern Europe in the Middle Ages, and its historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The heart of the city is the Markt square with its belfry, the best-known landmark, while the Burg square nearby is lined with ornate historic facades. Minnewater, sometimes called the Lake of Love, is a calm corner of town. Belgium is famous for chocolate, waffles and beer, and Bruges is also known for lace.
Sunset in Bruges
The moment we remember most was the colours on the water at sunset. The grandeur of the buildings, the romantic spirit of the city and the light on the water took us to a completely different time. Even on a short visit, try to time it for sunset.
Is Bruges good for couples?
The city’s rhythm is slow. You do not need to hurry to walk side by side, watch the canal and take photographs. We saw Bruges, lived it and loved it. The trip was in 2025, and before Bruges we visited Ghent and Brussels, then Antwerp.
Educated Moto Riders offers trips for those who would rather see Belgium with a group.
