Did you know that in Lisbon you can be on the ocean coast just 30 minutes later? That is exactly what we experienced in Cascais.
Where is Cascais and how far from Lisbon?
Cascais is a coastal town on the Atlantic, west of Lisbon, and in our notes it is just 30 minutes outside the city. Once a fishing town, it is now elegant and a wonderfully pleasant coastal route, with colourful streets, small beaches and ocean views. It was also a summer choice of the royal family in the 19th century, and Sintra and Cabo da Roca lie nearby.
Must-do in Cascais
Our short list:
- Get lost in the old town streets
- Enjoy the sun in the small coves
- Catch the sunset on the marina side
Boca do Inferno: the Devil’s Eye
Boca do Inferno, known as the Devil’s Eye, is a spot you should not skip. Its Portuguese name means “mouth of hell”. Ocean waves hit the rocks and create a giant natural cavity, and when the waves rise the sound and sight are almost frighteningly mesmerising. It takes its name from exactly that.
When we visited, there were people playing live music on the terrace, creating a lovely atmosphere. A restaurant facing the view was closed when we went.
Cascais or Lisbon?
Do not treat them as alternatives. Lisbon is a city experience with narrow streets and a riverside, while Cascais is the ocean. As we wrote in our post: “If you come to Lisbon, skipping this would be a big mistake.” Educated Moto Riders offers trips for those who like to travel coastal routes with a group.
