Some places make a rider’s eyes light up at the mere mention of the name. Col du Galibier is one of them, in the French Alps at 2642 metres.
Why is Col du Galibier so famous?
It is an iconic mountain pass, a favourite of motorcycle and cycling enthusiasts alike. It hosts one of the toughest and most iconic stages of the Tour de France, the famous French cycling race, which first added the pass to its route in 1911. With its winding roads, views and high altitude, it is a legendary route for motorcyclists. The pass lies on the border of the Savoie and Hautes-Alpes regions and is often ridden together with neighbouring passes such as Col du Télégraphe and Col du Lautaret.
When can you ride it?
The pass is generally open in summer, but it can be closed because of snow between October and April. On mountain roads it is a good idea to check the season and weather before setting out.
How did it feel?
For us it was one of the first mountain passes of this trip. Being at the summit, and the bends we climbed to get there, carry very different emotions. It was wonderful to be there. The post ends with videos that show the corners and the scenery better than words can.
Riding notes
Set your speed before each bend, look through the exit and open the throttle smoothly. At altitude, take regular breaks and dress in layers. On roads that cyclists love, slow down and leave a safe gap when you meet riders on pedals.
Rider Healthcare and Galata Healthcare products suit long riding days, and Educated Moto Riders offers advanced and safe riding training as well as motorcycle tours for riders who prefer a group.
