Cunda Island Guide: Camping, Streets and the Motofest

We saw two sides of Cunda Island near Ayvalık: camping by motorcycle among art-filled streets, and four days at the 14th Balıkesir Motofest in September 2025.

We went to Cunda twice and saw two different faces of it. On the first visit we arrived by motorcycle and camped; on the second we spent four days among people at the Motofest.

What can you do on Cunda Island?

Cunda is connected to Ayvalık by a bridge, so no ferry is needed. Its streets are full of art and every spot is lovely: a bit of art, visual beauty, greenery, nature and fun. The centre has cafes and restaurants, there are markets for campers and boutique hotels around. Go up the hills a little and you are alone with nature, greeted by green and blue. Officially named Alibey Island, it sits in the Aegean off Ayvalık.

Where to stay and can you camp?

Finding a place to stay is the hardest part of travelling for us. Campsites are economical and close to nature, so they suit us. We found Ada Camping on Cunda and it far exceeded our expectations: separate areas for tents and caravans, a bungalow option, its own beach without sunbed fees, not too crowded or noisy, polite staff and excellent cleanliness. The site is away from the centre but we rode in within 5-10 minutes along a pleasant road through a national park.

What did we do at the Balıkesir Motofest?

In September 2025 we were on Cunda for the 14th Balıkesir Motofest. We set up the Rider Healthcare stand with tastings, gifts, conversations and events. For four days we met many people, which meant a lot to us. It felt like both work and fun, and we enjoyed the end of the season on Cunda.

Educated Moto Riders offers motorcycle tours and trips for those who prefer to ride such routes with a group.
