Delphi and Arachova Guide: Two Stops on the Road to Athens

Delphi's ancient sanctuary and the mountain town of Arachova, two stops we added on the road to Athens by motorcycle in Greece. They did not disappoint us.

Some places are drawn on the route, others call you from the road. On our way to Athens in Greece, there were two stops we said we simply had to make: Delphi and Arachova. Neither disappointed us. This is the written summary of episode five of our Greece motorcycle series.

What is Delphi famous for?

Delphi is an ancient sanctuary on the slopes of Mount Parnassus in central Greece, dedicated to Apollo. In antiquity it was famous for the Oracle of Delphi, and it was considered the centre of the world. It is on the UNESCO World Heritage list. In our video we called it the “Cultural Centre of Europe”, and after seeing it the phrase makes more sense. We set off for Delphi from the Interstation camping in Stylida.

What is Arachova like?

Arachova is a ski town on the slopes of Parnassus. After Delphi we continued there and walked around the town. We could not help saying we should come back in winter.

Is it worth stopping on the way to Athens?

For us, yes. We added both as waypoints, and because of that we reached Athens in the evening, which meant we started the city with a night discovery. We try to spend one night and one day in each place we visit.

Riding the mountain roads

Check the season and weather before heading into mountain roads. On twisting climbs and descents, slow down before bends, look through the exit and use the brakes in a balanced way.

For long rides, Rider Healthcare makes an electrolyte sachet developed for hydration, and Galata Healthcare offers an evening magnesium tablet. Educated Moto Riders runs motorcycle tours and trips for riders who prefer a group.
