Dolomites Motorcycle Route: Lake Braies and Val di Funes

We chased the rain to Lake Braies in the Dolomites, rode through Val di Funes and said goodbye to the Alps in the fog on our June 2023 motorcycle tour.

In the Dolomites we rode through rain for a lake, and on the way back we raced the rain. The view at the end was worth every difficulty.

Where are the Dolomites and why does everyone go?

The Dolomites are a mountain range in northeastern Italy and part of the Alps. With wonderful roads and superb nature they are a dream for motorcyclists. Riding in the middle of nature made us feel like part of it. The region is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and its northern part, South Tyrol, is also strongly German-speaking.

What did we see at Lake Braies?

In June 2023 we were at Lake Braies: a pure lake among high mountains, wrapped in mist. In busy days we dream of taking a break in a place like this, and our minds are still there. We arrived after the rain, and on the ride back we headed into more rain. It was hard to get there, which made it far more meaningful.

What is in Val di Funes?

While touring the Dolomite villages we also stopped at Val di Funes. It made us ask “what kind of places are these?”: unspoiled, unpolluted nature. Everywhere is beautiful, yet each new place keeps surprising.

How did we say goodbye to the Dolomites?

As we set out to leave the mountains behind, one last pass sent us off. An extraordinary view appeared through the fog like a film scene, spreading everywhere at once. We watched everything vanish and reappear. The mountains gave us so much on this tour, and for now we said goodbye to the Dolomites and the Alps.

Riding wet, foggy passes calls for patience, and Educated Moto Riders offers an advanced and safe riding techniques course and motorcycle tours for those who prefer to ride with a group.
