Düsseldorf Guide: Altstadt, the World's Longest Bar

More than 260 bars and brewhouses sit side by side in Düsseldorf's Altstadt. A look at the Rhine city of fashion, art, modern architecture and sunsets.

More than 260 bars and brewhouses line up side by side in Düsseldorf’s Altstadt, and that is why the city is called “the longest bar in the world”. But describing Düsseldorf only through its bars would be unfair: as one of Germany’s fashion and art capitals, its modern architecture, elegant streets and historic fabric impressed us.

Where is Düsseldorf and what is it known for?

Düsseldorf sits on the Rhine in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, and is the state capital. It is known for fashion, art and business, and for Altbier, the dark local beer served in the old town.

Where do you go in Düsseldorf?

Our list has four stops on the Rhine:

  • Altstadt (old town): the heart of bars, brewhouses and historic streets.
  • Rheinuferpromenade: the riverside walkway, ideal for sunset on the Rhine.
  • MedienHafen: a harbour district of modern architecture.
  • Königsallee: the luxury shopping street.

What makes Düsseldorf special?

It is a place where modern life and history meet in balance. On one side stands the historic fabric of the Altstadt, on the other the bold buildings of the MedienHafen, once an old harbour reshaped by modern architecture. Art galleries and street festivals add their own energy.

You can combine it with other Rhine-area cities such as Cologne, Bonn or Aachen, and we visited Düsseldorf as one of the city stops of our Germany route.

For a day of walking from the river to the Altstadt and the harbour, we packed Rider Healthcare’s Cryo Silver + Modal socks and a Galata Healthcare body cream, while Educated Moto Riders offers trips for those who like company.
