Trying to finish an island in a single day is like emptying the sea with a spoon. We realised it quickly on Crete: this is a very big island.
Where is Crete and what is it known for?
Crete is a Greek island south of the Aegean Sea, stretching toward the Mediterranean. It is known as the home of the Minoan civilisation, and the Palace of Knossos is the best-known remnant of that culture. Cities such as Heraklion, Chania and Rethymno sit along the coast, with mountains, coves and small villages in between.
How did we plan our days on Crete?
We announced our arrival on the island with a reel, then set out with several routes already prepared. The hope was simply to see everywhere we wanted. On a large island, planning matters more than choosing a single corner. A practical method is to split the island into areas and focus on one each day.
What did we see in Agios Nikolaos?
While exploring we stopped at Agios Nikolaos and shared the moment in a short reel: “We keep exploring, we are in Agios Nikolaos.” The town lies in the east of the island on the Gulf of Mirabello, and a small lake called Voulismeni sits in its centre, connected to the sea.
Can you tour Crete by motorcycle?
We rode a BMW R 1250 GS Adventure. The size of the island is both an opportunity and a planning challenge for a motorcycle. As an instructor, Doruk suggests splitting the day into stages, slowing down before bends on coastal and mountain roads, taking regular breaks for water in the heat, and checking tyres, brakes and oil before setting out.
Rider Healthcare makes an electrolyte sachet with magnesium and potassium for hot summer rides, and Educated Moto Riders organises motorcycle tours and trips for those who prefer to ride with a group.
