Kaş ve Kalkan, Antalya

Kaş and Kalkan Travel Guide: The Early Riser's Town

Our first day in Kaş: a morning workout, the amphitheatre, off-season streets and Kalkan. Notes from a motorcycle trip on a route we want to ride again.

What we love most on holiday is getting up early and discovering a place before anyone spills into the streets: seeing everywhere in peace and making plans for the spots we like. Kaş suited that approach perfectly. It was the second stop of our motorcycle tour after Kemer, and we lost our hearts to this town.

Where are Kaş and Kalkan?

Kaş is a small district on Antalya’s Mediterranean coast. In antiquity it belonged to the Lycian region and has rock tombs and an ancient theatre. Kalkan is another small coastal town on the same stretch of coast, within the Kaş district.

What did we do in Kaş?

Our first impression was the blue seen from the hill, the harbour and the boats lined up like pearls. On our first day we walked to the places we liked, took photos and did a short morning workout. On the second day we walked down toward the sea, with a view at every step. On our last day we went to the amphitheatre, very close to the town centre, a nice walking route and a viewpoint, empty and quiet early in the morning.

When should you go?

Do not be fooled by how calm it is: the end of the season and early hours are the best times to discover a place. We like short visits that leave an excuse to return. We organised the whole route with at most two days in each place, and Kaş, Kalkan and the area around them stayed in our minds as a route we want to ride again by motorcycle.

Riding the Mediterranean coast

Slow down before bends on coastal roads, watch for sand and gravel, and take regular water breaks in the heat. Avoid riding when tired at the end of a long day.

For hot beach days, Rider Healthcare makes a light bamboo sock, and Galata Healthcare offers a daily body care cream. Educated Moto Riders organises motorcycle tours and trips for those who prefer a group.
