You do not forget the moment you first see Cologne Cathedral from afar: listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it reaches for the sky as one of the most magnificent examples of Gothic architecture. We stopped in two cities on the Rhine, Cologne and Bonn. They are very different from each other, and both are worth it.
What is there to do in Cologne?
Cologne is a city where historic fabric and modern life intertwine, telling a different story at every step. What stayed with us were Cologne Cathedral, which defines the skyline, peaceful walks along the Rhine, old squares decorated with colourful houses and streets full of the energy of modern art. Construction of the cathedral began in the Middle Ages and went on for centuries, reaching completion in the nineteenth century.
What should you see in Bonn?
Bonn, the former capital of Germany, is a calm yet impressive city where history and nature meet. It sits on the Rhine and is remembered for two reasons: it is the birthplace of Beethoven, the legend of classical music, and it was once the capital of West Germany. Do not miss the colourful streets of the Altstadt, the historic Beethoven-Haus and the lively Marktplatz. For those looking for both culture and calm, Bonn is a small stop with a big soul.
Cologne or Bonn?
We added both, and our advice is this: go to Cologne for the cathedral, the river and the city energy; go to Bonn for calm, Beethoven and the feel of a former capital. Two different spirits on the same Rhine. For days on foot, Rider Healthcare socks and a Galata Healthcare body cream can be useful in the bag, and Educated Moto Riders offers trips for those who want to explore with a group.
