Lisbon Travel Guide: Pastel de Nata, Trams and Tagus Evenings

What to do in Lisbon: narrow streets, Pastel de Nata, Praça do Comércio, the Lisbon tram and evenings when the lights come on. Save it for your route.

Picture a city with narrow streets, historic buildings and one side open to the river. Around every corner another detail appears. That is how we describe Lisbon, and we think it is one of Europe’s most enjoyable cities to wander.

Why is Lisbon so enjoyable?

Two reasons. First, it is easy to explore on foot. Second, every corner has a different detail. Together they make a city you can wander without a plan.

What should you do in Lisbon?

Our list is short and clear:

  • Eat a Pastel de Nata
  • Spend time at Praça do Comércio
  • Watch the city in the evening
  • Ride the Lisbon tram

Pastel de Nata: crisp outside and filled with custard inside, usually served with cinnamon. With a coffee it is one of the most classic Lisbon experiences.

Praça do Comércio: the big square open to the Tagus river, one of the city’s most iconic spots. It once held the royal palace, and its riverside face tells the story of Lisbon and water at a glance.

Evening Lisbon: the lights come on, the streets stir and the city feels livelier. Leave a gap in your schedule to see the places you saw by day again at night.

The tram: nostalgic trams through narrow streets are both transport and experience. Even if you board only to get somewhere, watch the city from the window.

Beyond the list

Lisbon is the capital of Portugal, built on hills where the Tagus nears the Atlantic. Well-known sights include the UNESCO-listed Belém Tower and Jerónimos Monastery, the lanes of Alfama and the music of fado. For a quick escape, Cascais on the ocean is only about 30 minutes away.

Our one rule is not to rush. For long walking days we packed Rider Healthcare’s Cryo Silver + Modal socks and a Galata Healthcare body cream, and Educated Moto Riders offers trips for those who prefer company.
