Meteora Travel Guide: Camping Beneath the Rock Monasteries

Meteora by motorcycle: towering rock pillars, monasteries on the summits and a night at Vrachos camping, from our BMW GS trip through Greece.

When you first look at Meteora, you think you have come to the wrong place, because the scenery in front of you seems too extraordinary to be real. We stopped here during our trip through Greece on a BMW R 1250 GS Adventure and recorded the feeling in a short reel: a captivating place, remarkable landforms, surprising beauty and a perfect tour.

What is Meteora and where is it?

Meteora lies in the Thessaly region of Greece, right beside the town of Kalambaka. Its name means “suspended in the air” in Greek, and it makes sense the moment you see it. Many of the towering rock pillars carry Orthodox monasteries on their summits, and the area is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The pillars are made of sandstone and conglomerate, shaped by erosion over millions of years.

Where did we stay?

We stayed at Vrachos camping and ended the day in a camping atmosphere. For riders, camping is one of the closest ways to sleep near a view like this.

Riding to Meteora

Greece is a great country for touring by motorcycle, and Meteora is one of the most striking stops. On mountain roads, set your speed before the corner, stop in a safe place to enjoy the view and keep your eyes on the road. Riders who would rather travel with a group can look at the motorcycle tours and trips of Educated Moto Riders, and a few Rider Healthcare and Galata Healthcare products can easily find a place in the luggage.
