Some places win you over with the first step. For us, Nafplio was exactly that: the first day, the first impression, the first wave of admiration. We were riding through Greece on a BMW R 1250 GS Adventure when we stopped here, and we left our hearts behind.
Where is Nafplio and what is it known for?
Nafplio lies on the Peloponnese, on the Argolic Gulf. It is remembered as the first capital of independent Greece, and the Venetian-era Palamidi fortress rises on the hill above town while the small Bourtzi fortress sits in the harbour. Narrow lanes and neoclassical facades set the scene.
How does a first day in Nafplio go?
Ours was spent walking and looking. Nafplio offers so much that it does not end in a single glance. Wandering its streets, collecting photos and saying “let’s look over there too” set the rhythm of the day. The question we asked in our Instagram post is the one we pass on to you: shall we walk its streets together?
Is Nafplio a romantic city?
We went as a couple and it felt that way to us. It is a city made for slow walks, and our photos say as much.
Leaving Nafplio
The caption of our reel said it all: we left our hearts in Nafplio, until we meet again. It joined our list of places we hate to leave behind.
Riding notes and what to pack
On old stone streets, patience beats speed, and polished stone can be slippery, so brake and turn smoothly. Our Greece trip ran from İpsala to Delphi, and the same Turkish site covers Athens, Delphi and Meteora. For long walking days we packed Rider Healthcare socks, and Galata Healthcare and Educated Moto Riders offer care and tour options for the road.
