Some moments have no before and after. There is only that moment. For us it began as we walked down the stairs of Praia do Camilo.
It was sunrise. A light rain was falling and everything was calm. There was no crowd, only the sound of waves and the peace of the moment.
Where is Praia do Camilo?
Praia do Camilo is in Lagos, in Portugal’s Algarve region. It is described as one of Portugal’s most iconic coves, and to us one of the most special spots in the Algarve. Wooden stairs run down between golden cliffs, and a turquoise ocean waits below. The view changes with every step.
When should you go?
Our answer is clear: sunrise. When we reached the beach at that hour there was no crowd, and the light was different. The moments when light hit the cliffs together with the raindrops were truly enchanting. Sunrise time shifts with the season, so simply come early and take the stairs patiently.
Our first time in the ocean
This was a first for us. The view already moves you on the stairs, but what we saw at the bottom was something else. Then we went into the water. It was neither too wavy nor too cold, quite pleasant in fact, and swimming in the ocean for the first time is a special thrill. We shared the moment as a reel on Instagram.

If you come to Lagos
Lagos is a town on the Algarve’s Atlantic coast, known for its rocky shoreline and coves. Our line from the post stands: if you come to Lagos, catch sunrise on this very beach. Wet stairs call for shoes with a firm sole.
A small snack that fits a bag helps on an early start, and Rider Healthcare’s fig and chia fruit bar is one such snack. Galata Healthcare offers a body cream, and Educated Moto Riders runs trips for those who prefer to explore coastal routes together.
