Even walking the streets of Rome feels like walking through history. We arrived at the threshold of the new year, on 31 December 2023, and spent a few unforgettable days among lights, squares and ancient stones.
What is there to do in Rome?
Rome means history, and historic sites cover the whole city. The two best known are the Colosseum and the Roman Forum, side by side like one whole but spread over a large area. The Palatine Hill lies in the same area. The Colosseum is an amphitheatre with a capacity of 80,000 spectators, built from travertine limestone, tuff and brick-faced concrete, and its history goes back to 72 AD. If you have not booked ahead, you can view the Colosseum from outside, climb the Palatine Hill, watch the Forum from the roadside while walking towards Piazza Venezia, and enjoy a bird’s-eye view from the side of the Capitoline Museums.
Which squares should you see?
Piazza del Popolo has an Egyptian obelisk at its centre and twin churches, and the best view is from Terrazza del Pincio above it. The Pantheon, an ancient Roman building used as a church today, became one of our “in our memories” pictures on 31 December. On New Year’s Eve we watched the new year show at Piazza di Spagna, the Spanish Steps.
Where to eat tiramisu?
For us, the best tiramisu in Rome is at Pompi, with classic, pistachio and caramel flavours. We tried three, and one of us loved the classic while the other preferred pistachio.
