The first stretch of Saklikent Canyon looks easy. Then you meet fast-moving water, and the real adventure begins.
Where is Saklikent Canyon?
Saklikent Canyon sits inside Saklikent National Park in Antalya, Turkey. At 18 km long, it is considered the longest canyon in the world. What makes it special is not only the length but the fact that you can step inside and walk between tall rock walls with water running underfoot.
What is the walk like?
Up to a certain point you can move along in ordinary flip-flops. After that you have to cross water that rushes by at speed. Once you are on the other side, you can keep walking inside the canyon for a long time.
So the visit has two moods: a relaxed, curious entrance, then a small test of nerve with the water, and then calm again as the canyon opens up in front of you.
Should you wear flip-flops?
We do not recommend them. When we were there, plenty of people lost their footing in the current. Shoes that fit snugly and are made for getting wet are the smarter choice. As a riding instructor, Doruk’s rule applies on foot too: read the surface first, then decide, and never rush beside fast water.
A short checklist:
- Wet-friendly shoes that stay on your feet
- A dry pair of socks for afterwards
- Waterproof protection for phones and valuables
- A team that looks out for each other
What to bring for a canyon day
After a day on wet, tired feet, a lightweight bamboo sock from Rider Healthcare and a daily body-care cream from Galata Healthcare are easy additions to the bag; Educated Moto Riders offers trips for those who prefer to travel as a group.
