Imagine a town where an enormous rock hangs over the houses. In Spain, that town is Setenil de las Bodegas.
What is Setenil de las Bodegas?
Setenil de las Bodegas sits in the south of Andalusia, in the province of Cádiz. It is known for an architecture you can see in very few places in the world. We called it “the rock-under town of Andalusia”.
The small town stands at the edge of a canyon carved out by a river. Its houses and narrow streets are built under and beside giant rocks, and with their whitewashed walls they look like something from a fairy tale.
What should you look at in Setenil?
The real story of the town is its architecture, so you do not need a packed schedule:
- Look at the houses and streets beneath the rocks
- Watch the landscape the river has shaped along the canyon
- Walk slowly between the whitewashed walls
How does Setenil fit into an Andalusian route?
White villages and small towns make a lovely route in Andalusia, known as the Pueblos Blancos. Setenil goes well with stops such as Ronda and Arcos de la Frontera. The word “bodegas” means wine cellars or storerooms in Spanish.
A snack that fits in a backpack helps on small-town days, and Educated Moto Riders offers motorcycle tours for those who would rather ride such a route with a group.
