Tirilye Travel Guide: Colourful Streets and a Quiet Coast

Tirilye on the Marmara coast is colourful, historic and calm. Notes on walking its streets, trying local products and finding a quiet end of the shore road.

Tirilye is lovely in every way: its colours, history, people, streets and nature. It is lively yet away from the crowds, and in fact close to everywhere, which makes it a perfect escape.

What can you do in Tirilye?

Our day went roughly like this:

  • Wandering through colourful streets
  • Chatting with locals and trying their good products
  • Walking along the seafront
  • Sitting at a simple fish restaurant in the evening to the sound of the waves

None of it is complicated, and that simplicity is the beauty. We think those who know it should return, and those who have not should go, listen to themselves and enjoy the calm.

Where is Tirilye?

Tirilye is a small settlement on the Marmara coast in Mudanya, Bursa, officially named Zeytinbağı. It was once a village with a Greek population and found new life after the 1923 population exchange. Today it is known for its stone houses, narrow streets and old buildings, and olive groves are tied to its name.

Is there a quiet corner in Tirilye?

At the very end of the shore road there is a stony place with nobody around. Some beauty is not seen until you walk to the end. On our morning walk, with a light rain, being away from everyone and everything felt very good.

Is Tirilye good for walking?

Yes, both in the streets and along the coast. Early morning, even in the rain, felt like the best time to catch the quiet of the place. For those who would rather not plan such getaways alone, Educated Moto Riders runs trips and motorcycle tours.
