Venice was going to be either the start or the end of this tour. It became the end, and a tour this beautiful could hardly have ended in a better place.
What do you do in Venice?
Venice is a one-of-a-kind city of canals, architecture and streets. We came down from the Alps and put the full stop on our trip here, so we explored without hurry, with the ease of the last day of a motorcycle tour. The next day we had a long ferry journey ahead. We did not know whether we were ready, but the city did us good before the ferry.
What is Venice known for?
Venice is in the Veneto region of north-eastern Italy, built on islands in a lagoon. Canals take the place of streets, and there are no cars in the historic centre. Venice and its lagoon are on the UNESCO World Heritage list. Landmarks include St Mark’s Square, St Mark’s Basilica, the Doge’s Palace and the Rialto Bridge.
Can you go to Venice by motorcycle?
Not into the historic islands. The practical way is to park the bike on the mainland and enter the city on foot or by water. Expect stone paving and bridge steps, so comfortable footwear matters.
How does it feel when a motorcycle tour ends?
Finishing the tour brought both great joy and sadness. After mountain passes, lakes and mist, the canals of Venice felt like a closing chapter. The memories stay with us, and sharing them is how they stay with you too.
The rest of the tour is told in our posts on the 2023 Alps tour, the Stelvio Pass, the Dolomites, the Swiss Alps and the Grossglockner.
For city walking days, Rider Healthcare makes a modal sock, and Galata Healthcare offers a magnesium tablet for winding down after a busy trip. Educated Moto Riders organises motorcycle tours and trips for those who prefer a group.
