Matera Travel Guide: Sassi di Matera, the Stone Age City

Matera in southern Italy: the Sassi di Matera old town, inhabited since the Stone Age, loved by filmmakers and a different place in the morning and evening.

Picture a city where people have lived since the Stone Age, one that was considered a shame for centuries and is now a magnet for visitors. That is the story of Matera.

Where is Matera and why is it so fascinating?

Matera is an impressive city in the Basilicata region of southern Italy. It has been the subject of many films and has been inhabited since the Stone Age. Historically it was seen as a source of shame for Italy, while today it attracts travellers from all over the world. Its old town is on the UNESCO World Heritage list, and Matera was a European Capital of Culture in 2019.

What are the Sassi di Matera?

The Sassi di Matera is the old town and the heart of the city. The word “sassi” means stones, and the old quarter is made of homes and structures carved into the rock, in two main districts, Sasso Barisano and Sasso Caveoso. Its best feature is that it changes with the time of day: morning and evening have completely different atmospheres. If you can, see it at both times.

Which films were shot in Matera?

Pasolini’s “The Gospel According to St. Matthew” and Mel Gibson’s “The Passion of the Christ” are among the productions filmed in these streets.

What does Matera remind people of?

Everyone who saw it told us it looks very much like Mardin, the stone city in southeastern Turkey.

Where does Matera fit in our route?

Matera was the last place we shared from our motorcycle tour that started in Istanbul, crossed to Italy from Igoumenitsa and covered Puglia and the Amalfi Coast. If you ride in southern Italy, park the bike and explore the old stone quarter on foot, and check the weather and route before you go.

For long walking days, Rider Healthcare makes a modal sock for city days, and Galata Healthcare offers a daily body care cream. Educated Moto Riders organises motorcycle tours and trips for those who would rather ride in a group.
